Top 10 habitable countries for people who are 60 and above

Ready to figure out which countries you should consider relocating to or just visiting more often as you start to get older? Keep reading and you'll find out!

When we consider how tough life on Earth can be for many, it seems befitting to save the best for the autumn of life...

The population of people over 60 across the globe is on the rise with the recent increase in life expectancy for most countries. In fact, research has shown that the population of geriatrics is expected to hit 2.1 billion in 2050, a whopping figure if one considers its recent number of 901 million people.

In a bid to ease the burdens that come with living as one starts to clock 60 years and above, the Global AgeWatch Index has assessed 96 countries and provided a list of the best countries to live in for persons who are 60 and above.

There you have it, the best countries for elderly people to live in.

What do you think of these countries? Which of them will you love to live in? Tell us in the comment section below!

Australia should rank higher than America and yet it isn't even mentioned. Free health care for one thing and government subsidised medication for pensioners. I was surprised Australia wasn't on the list.

Please take the UK out of this list? The pension is the worst in Europe. I worked for 45 years and my state pension is £107. When I questioned this they said it was because I worked part time for 5 years when my children were babies! All my friends are very much the same, even the top state pension based on stamps paid in through your wages is only £140 a week! Pension poverty is rife in the UK! Ask “Age Concern” a charity for poor pensioners!

In the USA, life is good for seniors... if you are rich

I am a bit suspicious about the inclusion of the USA because of the underclass. I am sure its wonderful for people who are well off! I think NZ and Australia would be better than the USA or the UK

How can the US get in the top 50, let alone 10, with their abysmal health care system, or lack of, that they have. Australia and NZ should be miles in front of the USA and the UK.

New Zealand should be in this list, certainly above USA. In Australia, unless you have citizenship, you are treated like a second class citizen, even if you have permanent residential qualifications . Scandinavian countries are well known for looking after their older people

Being Canadian I'm thankful for our health care system which I know for certain is miles ahead of the USA At least I won't go bankrupt if I need surgery and a long hospital stay

Suprised that the US made it on that list. I supposed if you are well off financially it’s o.k. But I would never want to live there - you couldn’t pay me enough to move there!

I have lived in four of these countries and agree with your top ten. However you could have made it top twelve and include Denmark and Finland.

Hmmm. None of these countries have a climate that I consider to be livable. They all get so cold most winters that this wonderful liquid we call water get frozen out of doors. Only southern half of U.S. qualifies. Yuck.

The UK at No 10 is rubbish as it stands at 28/11/2023 the basic pension per week is £245 less 20% tax =£196 The basic weekly wage at £11/hour 5days/week =£440. Thus a pensioner on the basic pension is in utter povery.

Australia and New Zealand should have made the list - friendly people and good services on health

Very hard to find any studies where the USA gets ranked in the top 20. The rest are hardly surprising although there are some notable exceptions.

Pat Roberts, plus we get taxed on our pensions - tax on money that has already been taxed!

True. But a lot of us who live outside major unban areas are unable to find family doctors. It infuriates me that foreign trained medical doctors face so many barriers to practising in Canada.
