Everyday we communicate with different people and notice certain traits of character and habits that might be very unusual for us. Here are 10 psychology terms that will help you understand people better.
All patterns of behavior have their explanation in psychology.
#1 Alexithymia
This term means ‘no words for emotions’. Experiencing this condition a person isn’t able to show the emotions they feel.
#2 Affectation
Affectation is the expression of a feeling or mood with the intention to impress or surprise. This behavioural pattern looks unnatural.
#3 Rigidity
Rigidity in psychology means that a person can’t change their views and habits even if they learn new details which prove their beliefs were wrong.
#4 Overcompensation
It is an excessive reaction to the feeling of inferiority or guilt which can be true or false.
#5 Insight
The feeling of understanding how to solve a difficult problem is known as 'insight'. The main feature of insights is its spontaneity.
#6 Locus of control
This term means that people attribute their success or failures to the external factors or blame themselves for everything.
#7 Affiliation
Affiliation is the need for communication, friendship and a sense of social involvement.
#8 Barnum Effect
This phenomenon occurs when people believe that personality descriptions are written about them though these descriptions are too generic. An example of the Barnum effect is the belief in horoscopes. People are trying to find a correspondence between the text of the horoscope and their personality.
#9 Phubbing
It is a modern and one of the most frequent phenomena of modern society. It means snubbing your interlocutor to look to your smartphone. Phubbing connects you with people who are far away. On the other hand, it distracts you from the people around you.
#10 Assertiveness
It is a very important personality trait in the modern world. Assertiveness means that a person is confident and can refuse any offer without being aggressive. For example, when somebody offers unnecessary services by telephone an assertive person will answer "Thank you. I don't need it".
