Carol Koch, I apply a rubbing alcohol to my face to remove the dirt, the oil, the sweat, etc. It is poisonous only if you drink it.

Elsy O. Stromberg, Way too many babies died in the 19th century. I think snapping the photos of dead people is creepy. That is why I never took any photos of my dead parents @ the funeral visitation/service.

Cheryl McMeekin, What's better now is medical treatment. People died young because there was no known treatment for their illness. Nowadays you're more likely to get shot [at least in the U.S. unfortunately] or get killed in an accident.

The arsenic usage for beautiful pale skin has been part of many Victorian mystery novels. I wasn’t aware of the number of different types of mourning clothes for different levels of society. The photography was also well known. I knew social calls were in the afternoon but I didn’t know the exact timing. The seance stuff was a booming business for a while. One pair of sisters convinced their paying customers that the noises they created by cracking their fingers and toes were how the dearly departed spoke to their loved ones. 😁

The practice of taking photos of the deceased was common among freemasons. I could see a very old photo of a Grand Master of the order, who arrived in Uruguay with the Garibaldi mercenaries, and remained in the country. He is sitting on a wooden armchair, looking very much alive and exhibiting a number of mason symbols. Eerie.

I’m not surprised by any of it. Arsenic was taken by many women because it caused their skin to look translucent.
