According to the last will of Ptolemy XII, Cleopatra's father, she and her brother Ptolemy XIII would rule Egypt together. His will was done after his death and Cleopatra and her brother got married following the Egyptian tradition.
At that time, Julius Caesar came to Egypt and asked the two young rulers to repay the debt their father left. However, neither Cleopatra nor Ptolemy XIII wanted to pay. Cleopatra was too smart and asked her servants to dress her up and wrap into a carpet, then they brought the carpet to Caesar.

Caesar provided Cleopatra with a beautiful residence to live in, on a shore of the Tiber but his people didn't like the foreign queen. They thought that Caesar wanted to become a Pharaoh and to move the capital into Alexandria. He should have rejected the rumors but he didn't. His close friends killed him.
His last will didn't contain a word about his son, Ptolemy, thus, frightened Cleopatra had to run back home with her child.
