I caught the Trans Mongolian Express from Beijing to Ulan Baatar back in 2005, I was on a tour with Intrepid and just loved the time we spent there staying in the Gers.

Such a beautiful place ....Could they not use electricity or gas for cooking to avoid pollution in ' gers' ? Will there be a rush of settlers in the global warming years to come ?

Can't be shown in a photo, but the Mongolian people also have an amazing style of singing, called Tuvan or Mongolian throat singing. You can hear examples on youtube.

Beautiful place but I think it is too cold for anyone who is not originally from the place. But reading about it, as well as seeing the pictures, is education enough. Amazing and interesting!

Veronics Moss, Actually, it was part of China at one time and it included a small territory to the northwest called Tannu Tuva. In 1943? the Soviet Union took over Tannu Tuva, even though it was a part of a presumed ally, China, at the time.

Very interesting. A couple of questions 1) I thought the Mongol empire at its largest extent stretched as far south as the Strait of Malacca; none of the maps show that, and 2) do they still use the Cyrillic alphabet, or did they ditch that with independence and go back to what, I believe, was a Uighur script?
